BIO -

Drawing inspiration from the golden age of 60's and 70's soul rock and funk, The Split was formed by brothers Matthew and Curtis Chaffey in Ottawa, Canada. Their new old soul sound is in command of a convincing new wave of old soul revival — an electronic style of soul with the stirrings to be music-changing. Progressive electronica layered to build on soulfulness, The Split’s music is atmospheric and highly danceable.

Touring and promoting their debut EP released by Label Records in 2014, The Split’s Can't Get Enough was recorded with Ken Friesen (The Tragically Hip, Great Big Sea, Hawksley Workman), mastered by Phillip Victor Bova (Feist, Bahamas), and features horn lines by the legendary Texas Horns (Austin, TX). After being named 2015’s Rising Stars by Stingray Music and with their single “Can’t Stand It” trending on the Top 10 national radio charts on college radio stations, the band is now working on a full length follow-up album. Release date TBA.

Matthew Chaffey, Lead Singer

Sharp, clean and disciplined, Matthew Chaffey’s smoky timber fills the room. His breath-filled vocal performance is achingly broody and octave-jumping. With fueled openings and electrifying hooks, Matthew’s energy stirs on stage and carries crowds across wild emotional waves. That and he’s captivating to watch.

Curtis Chaffey, Guitar

Levitating the audience with texture, timing and a big sweet guitar sounds, Curtis Chaffey plays with enough electricity to shake your soul. Engaging the crowd and breaking out every now and then to have a moment to himself, Curtis’ fiery and intense delivery shakes all the people dancing in the room.

“The sound is polished, energetic, with a retro feel that’s been polished into something that is contemporary and broadly popular.” — Peter Simpson, The Ottawa Citizen

“...Incredible pipes of Matthew Chaffey and the electric guitar dexterity of Curtis Chaffey... the result was a fresh and upbeat take on modern soul, with songs they’ve written themselves.” — Lynn Saxberg, The Ottawa Citizen’s Digital Lounge

“Their groove is a melting pot of classic soul and 60’s rock, with astonishing results...” — Festival International du Blues de Tremblant

“This region’s most exciting new soul band featuring all-star musicians: highest recommendation possible...” — The Black Sheep Inn (Wakefield, QC)

“This band does not look like they sound. The Split was soulful and surprisingly crunchy and gruff. Their YouTube videos do not do them justice — this band is heavy (and that’s good!) Would recommend.” ...” — Peter Hates Music

Selected winner of the 2015 Stingray Music Rising Star competition at CityFolk Festival.

Regional Finalists in the 2014 CBC Searchlight Competition & selected as a“Top Standout” by Grant Lawrence (CBC Radio 3)
